Types of Glue

Polystyrene:

  • Can be purchased at: Hobby/Craft Shops and Office Supplies Stores
  • Price range: $3.00-$5.00

This is the primary glue to use when building a plastic kit. Depending on the manufacturer, this glue can have different properties. Companies like Testors and Model Master work differently from the Japanese companies. The American model companies tend to have slower setting types of glue with thicker viscosity while the Japanese brands tend to dry a lot quicker and wick into the cracks better. Personally we would recommend using the Japanese cement glue instead of the American counterpart since they tend to perform better.

The way how polystyrene glue bonds the parts together is by melting the two pieces and fusing them together.

Cynoacrylate:

  • Can be purchased at: Hobby/Craft Shops and Office Supply or Drug Stores
  • Price range: $3.00-$6.00

Cynoacrylate glue (CA glue) is more commonly known as Krazy glue. CA glue comes in different viscosities and drying times. It's always good to have a thick slow drying and a thin fast drying glue available. CA glue dries by evaporation however the drying time can be decreased by applying an accelerator to the glue. Accelerator will cause the glue to cure instantly. Take care not to have any CA glue on your skin when applying the accelerator.

Epoxy Glue:

  • Can be purchased at: Hobby/Craft Shops and Office Supplies Stores
  • Price range: $3.00-$5.00

Epoxy Glue is a 2 part Glue. This glue dries through a chemical reaction of 2 different liquids mixed together. There are different types of epoxy glue with different setting times

The 5minute epoxy is the most common. Epoxy glue also takes at least 24 hours to fully cure so letting the glued parts sit overnight is needed. Epoxy glue will adhere to just about any type of surface, wood, plastic, or metal.

PVA Glue:

  • Can be purchased at: Hobby/Craft Shops and Office Supplies Stores
  • Price range: $3.00-$7.00

PVA (Polyvinyl Acetates) Glue is Elmer's Glue. it's a white colored glue. This type of glue comes in handy for temporarily tacking things together or for use with other aspects of the hobby (ex dioramas). A better alternative to Elmer's glue is tacky glue. It has the same basic properties except the viscosity is a lot thicker then Elmer's. PVA glue can be used to glue clear parts like canopies.
